PrestaShop order numbering – your own number instead of a random code

Do you want to replace a random PrestaShop order reference with a legible number?

The Numeric Order Reference Module replaces PrestaShop's default random reference code, such as FTECXTKRM, with a simple sequence number, for example 000000017.

Readable numbering makes it easier to search for orders in the administration panel and communicate with customers, employees and companies cooperating with the store.

How to change the order number in PrestaShop?

After installation, the module automatically generates subsequent order reference numbers according to the set counter. Each new order receives another unique number.

Instead of a hard-to-remember alphanumeric code, the store can use numbering in the format:

  • 000000001,
  • 000000002,
  • 000000003,
  • 000000004.

The length of the number can be adjusted to the size of the store and the number of orders handled.

Readable order numbers for customers

A sequential number is much easier to pass during a phone call or email correspondence than a random string of characters.

The customer can give the employee a simple order number, and the employee can quickly find the right order in the PrestaShop panel.

Numbering also works on documents, in correspondence and in internal order handling processes.

Own numbering length – from 1 to 12 digits

The module allows you to specify the length of generated numbers from 1 to 12 digits.

For example, six-digit numbering allows you to use the range for 999 999 orders, while with a length of 12 digits the range reaches 999 999 999 999 orders.

Numbers can be completed with leading zeros, so that all references remain uniform.

Safe numbering without duplicates

The module uses a atomic database counter based on the LAST_INSERT_ID mechanism. Thanks to this, subsequent numbers are allocated safely even when the store receives multiple orders at the same time.

The solution does not use the simple MAX(id_order)+1 mechanism, which can cause numbering problems when creating multiple orders at the same time.

Resistant order numbering to high traffic

The number generation mechanism has been prepared for stores where orders can be placed simultaneously by many customers.

Each order receives its own number, without the risk of number duplication resulting from the simultaneous processing of several orders.

Neumbering control in the administration panel

The module provides the administrator with information about the current numbering status.

In the panel you can check, among others:

  • current counter value,
  • last 10 orders,
  • comparison of the generated number with the value stored in the database,
  • discrepancies in numbering detected.

Synchronization of numbering after PrestaShop migration

If there are discrepancies in the numbering after migrating the store, importing data or manually changing the database, the administrator can use the Sync function.

The module allows you to restore the consistency of the counter and order numbers in this way.

Protection against accidental revocation of numbering

The module controls the current value of the counter and does not allow you to set the numbering below the value that has already been used.

This helps to avoid accidental reuse of numbers in a store where many orders have already been placed.

Warning against numbering exhaustion

The module monitors the use of the available range of numbers. When the 80% capacity of the selected format is reached, the administrator receives a warning in the administration panel.

The information is also saved in the PrestaShop log, so that the administrator can increase the numbering range in advance.

No modifying PrestaShop files

The module uses a standard hook actionGenerateDocumentReference. It does not require modifying the PrestaShop core files or changing the store template.

Thanks to this, the installation of the module does not involve manual editing of PrestaShop system files.

What PrestaShop stores is the module intended for?

Numerical order reference will work especially in stores that want to simplify order identification and communication with customers.

The module is useful, among others, in stores that:

  • want to replace random PrestaShop references with numbers,
  • support a large number of orders,
  • they provide telephone customer service,
  • they want to make it easier for employees to find orders,
  • need to control the continuity of numbering,
  • migrated the store or order data between systems.

The most important functions of the module

  • Numeric order reference instead of random PrestaShop code.
  • Numbering from 1 to 12 digits with the possibility of using leading zeros.
  • Atomic database counter protecting against duplicates.
  • Numbering continuity control in the administration panel.
  • Numbering synchronization after migration or database changes.
  • Warning of impending counter overflow.
  • No modification of PrestaShop core files.
  • No need to modify the store template.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to change a random PrestaShop order reference to a number?

Yes. The module replaces the default PrestaShop random reference with a numerical sequential number.

Is it possible to set zeros at the beginning of the order number?

Yes. The module allows you to specify the length of a number from 1 to 12 digits, so you can use the format 000000017, for example.

Can order numbers be repeated?

The mechanism uses an atomic database counter, which ensures the safe allocation of successive numbers even when placing multiple orders at the same time.

Does the module change existing orders?

The module does not modify existing orders during standard operation. The synchronization function is available to control and restore numbering consistency in specific situations, such as after data migration.

Does the module require modification of PrestaShop files?

No. The module uses a standard actionGenerateDocumentReference hook and does not require modifying the PrestaShop core files.

Does the module work with a large number of orders?

Yes. The numbering mechanism was based on an atomic database counter, thanks to which subsequent numbers can be safely allocated even when creating orders at the same time.
